Precocious 6-year-old Chip
has only known life with his two dads, Cody and Joey, in the small town of
Martin, Tennessee. All of that changes when Cody dies suddenly in a car
accident and his family takes Chip away from Joey. Dealing with the loss of his
partner, and now his son, Joey – a working class, gay, Asian American man in a
Southern community – fights to get his son back, even though the law is not on
his side. In the Family tells an
unpredictable story centered on a custody battle about interracial relations,
the American South, and what it means to be a family.
In the Family is the directorial debut of Patrick Wang, who also played Joey. Wang wrote the script with the intention of selling it to a producer, but when his father fell ill with cancer, he decided to shoot the film himself with his own savings. Thirty festivals rejected the film before it premiered. This fresh and remarkably moving drama has since become a critically acclaimed award winner.
